The educational system in Poughkeepsie is broken. Facilities, staff, materials, and programming are at a bare minimum – with poor spending, attendance and graduation rates among the lowest in the state. To improve the situation, we propose extending the education network to students' own neighborhoods. Starting with science, music, and art, neighborhood incubators would begin operations in a vacant house near a local school and would utilize adjacent properties for program expansion. The system will establish partnerships with local industries, universities and community groups, and will be staffed by college graduates to foster relationships between different youth age groups. <Beyond School> will enrich students’ learning experience and open doors to greater social and economic mobility in the future.
